Shopify

It is, after WooCommerce, the largest online sales platform in the world.

The beginning

In 2004, Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake launched ‘Snowdevil’, an online shop selling snowboarding equipment. Lütke found existing e-commerce products inadequate and built a platform himself, using the open-source framework Ruby on Rails. In June 2006, the platform was launched under the name Shopify. The company is based in Ottawa. Liquid, the open-source template language on which Shopify themes still run, also dates from this period. In its early days, the company was also known as Jaded Pixel.

From the outset, Shopify has grown from a start-up into a leading e-commerce platform. In 2015, Shopify went public.

From 2016

Shopify evolved from e-commerce software into a broader platform featuring an app store, point-of-sale (POS) systems, dispatch options, the Shop app and Shop Pay. In the summer of 2018, the company recorded its first quarter with a turnover exceeding one billion dollars. Based on my own knowledge, not on search results: during the coronavirus pandemic, trade via Shopify grew significantly.
