Book review: "Dutch Type"

Recently purchased this book second-hand. Beautiful edition, and very worthwhile in terms of content. It discusses the development of Dutch typography, from the time of Gutenberg to the moment the book was published (2004).

The author, Jan Middendorp, vividly describes how the typographic arts originated in the Netherlands, including a nice story about who actually 'invented' (read: improved for production) the art of printing: Johannes Gutenberg, or our own Laurens Coster from Haarlem.

It also includes an inventory of all kinds of Dutch typographers and their fonts. It is quite a list of more or less well-known and even famous typographers: G. W. Dijsselhof (1866-1924), Sjoerd de Roos (born 1877), Stefan Schlesinger (1896-1944), Jan van Krimpen (1892-1958), Chris Lebeau (1878-1845), Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931), Wim Crouwel (1928-2019), Nicolaas Wijnberg (born 1918), Willem Sandberg (1897-1984), Chris Brand (born 1921), Gerrit Noordzij (born 1931), Bram de Does (born 1934), Gerard Unger, Lucas de Groot, Max Kisman. To name but a few.
