El Greco

Look at those long-legged, stretched figures, so gracieus, forming these beautiful curvy, flowing lines across the composition - wonderful, right? It's all very vertically composed, figures and forms stacked onto each other, reaching to the sky, signaling to look up, towards heaven. To see the glory of his God. Now I'm not a believer, but ... I almost would become one by looking at this kind of work!

  • A little about the man

El Greco was born in the Kingdom of Candia (modern Crete), which was at that time part of the Republic of Venice, Italy, and the center of Post-Byzantine art. He trained and became a master within that tradition before traveling at age 26 to Venice, as other Greek artists had done.
