The swastika: a symbol with a history...
The swastika symbol has a very fraught history, for obvious reasons, but has existed for centuries, with very different meanings. It features in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism, as well as in ancient Rome and amongst the Vikings. Both left- and right-facing variants can be found.
Ever since the Nazis began using it as a symbol of their ideology (Nazism), this symbol has become tainted. But in other times, under different circumstances, its meaning was quite different: vitality, sanctity and good fortune.
